%windir%\inf (usually c:\windows\inf) folder has the "INF" (information) files of most of the components...so in case any component get screwed; simply visit this folder; right click the INF file and reinstall the component; e-g mdac.inf is Microsoft's Data Access Components

I guess; repairing using these INF files may not be a recommened method; as chances are that some sypware/virus/trojan infects these INF files..

It all started due to the situation where my MDAC got corrupted; and it appears that MDAC8 RTM (Latest version from http://microsoft.com) is older than XPSP2 version. The only way to repair MDAC on XPSP2 box is using INF file, and the mdac.inf file needs files from %windir%\servicepackfiles\i386 and XP cd.

I therefore recommend that you backup your %windir%\inf and %windir%\servicepackfiles to some safe place before they get corrupted!
