Earthquake-how can we help as IT professionals?

All we have been experincing the greatest disaster in pakistan. The greatest or i say postive thing came out from this incident that whole nation is united along with Govt and opposition members.

Being IT people.I am wondering how can we help the ppl and Volunteers.

MS employees developed katrinaSafe.com(http://katrinasafe.com/Main.aspx)

I know we cant have all such facilities, like they provided PDAs with special smart client application, along with this website have all info.

but atleast a website could be developed on urgent basis ,have info like required things affected areas(because ppl are just donating everything regardless of the need,

The basic sections/components which r on my mind are:

1)list of required things w.r.t areas
2)give facility to volunteers to send info on main website about survivors along with their image(if possible),it could help their relatives to find out about themselves.(*)

3)an Interface for volunteers to contact other volunteers and exchange Info.

(*)=> we need a Mobile Interface as well, the simplest one SMS one,the one mobilink and Ufone provided for donation,a simple interface to send SMS on ShortCode number which will store info in database

this was an idea in my mind, for this help of any mobile company will be required,i dont want to take any credit to make such application but i would be more than glad to contribute, its not time to take credit, rather helping the deserved people

Comments are most welcome

Hi Adnan, i really appreciate your thoughts and emotions, but let me raise one more issue here,Instead of IT support the effected peoples needs real support such as food, clothes and camps. Although we got so much aids and foods but they are not delivered properly to the affected peoples, so wouldnt be nice that some of us arrange a tour to these areas so that we can help them physically.

If we can go there for picnic and enjoyment than why not for help them

I am ready to support for this

Well first off, my sympathies goes out to those who have been directly or indirectly affected by this devastating event. InshaAllah we will be through with this trauma soon. Both ideas seems plausible, however, in my opinion we can discuss long-term issues like Global Warning, Divine-curse and etc in time to come, but for now JUST GIVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!!!!PLEASE...

As far as food and other things are concerned,Alhamdolillah,in karachi, the progress is going exceptional, there are around 2,000 volunteer young guys and girls, who belong to different professionals like Doctors, engineers, students, have been staying day and night at PAF museam, just to save the lives of survivors.if you come Khi,you would get surpirsed that how whole khi has given everythin for this cause, all such reminding me religious wars like Badar battle when ppl donated everything for sake of Islam.

Ofcourse food and other things are top priority but you should also not forget that all such things are possible if there is a Communication Setup between volunteers in affected areas and in base camps like Karachi,Lahore,ISB etc.

what i suggest to have a simpler and faster communication setup ,if you re in Pakistan, you would have idea that mobiles have becomepretyt common and their coverage has been spread to distant villages as well,Telenor recently started new stations in affected areas. What is required that Aid workers, equipped with ordinary mobiles can send SMS to a particular shortcode ,and info will appear on database and can be intimated to other aid workers as well, ppl living abroad can find out bout their loveones as well,as i gave katrinasafe.com example, the classical effort by MS employyes to save lives of NO ppl.

this idea came in my mind that i have worked on SMS shortcode technologies,if noone else can`t,then i want to start it myself, remember, only MONEY and FOOD cant do everything, right now we re like in state of war,so we have to utilize our own skills as well.

problem is that i dont know anyone in Mobilink ,Ufone etc,the service i used for such app was for US only and cant be utilized here,if local operators could do something, then it would be very helpful for the communication,I would try to reach concerned people, along with channels ppl like ARY,GEO etc.
