Telenor launches first Mobile TV in Pakistan

Wow!, this is really amazing!! Telenor Pakistan has launched first ever Mobile TV service in Pakistan which covers local and International channels including Aljazeera. According to Telenor:

Now watch your favorite local and international channels with your Telenor connection. Enjoy a great mix of entertainment, news, sports, music and business channels on Pakistan’s largest EDGE & GPRS enabled network, anytime, anywhere. Telenor Mobile TV is available for all Telenor Prepaid and Postpaid customers.

Telenor Mobile TV is GPRS-dependent service and works best in Telenor EDGE Hotspots all across Pakistan. You can check whether you are in an EDGE HOTSPOT by using our Cell Info Display service click here

I have telenor SIM on my T-Mobile Pocket PC and just for sake of fun, i did send them an SMS on mentioned number, the message in return mentioned the rates of service which is Rs.499/month+ GPRS charges[if you are not on EDGE]+ TAX. I could call it 100% econimical if there was no GPRS factor in the middle. However, it's a good start.

Right now I am not sure which technology is being used on front-end but after reading handset detailsheree, it seems that either they are using some crossplatform technology for instance Flashlite or have made two different versions; J2ME and Windows based. I am not sure. If possible then I would sure give it a try and share the experience with you. Best of Luck Telenor!

Update: Ok, I just read this, they are providing different clients and it's NOT flash based. Read further details here.

Telenor is really innovating rapidly comparing to other providers....

Do their Persona package have unlimited GPRS for fixed rent like Mobilink?

BTW; know any VPN client (PPTP) for Symbian?

Khurram, Telenor is not a new company. If you go thru their achievments in Europe then you would find that they have done NOTHNIG yet in Pakistan. I give you a little example, the book I purchased from Amazon about Symbian Development had a case study about Person locational system via GPS. the system was made by Telenor and its running succesfully in Norway.

Telenor has lots of things to offer and they are revealing it one by one as I read few months back tht telenor has signed an agreement with Karachi based SPARCO to develop map based navigation system for karachi so that telenor users can navigate routes via mobile. Sparco is supposed to provide maps and weather related info.

I have been using their GPRS and its damn awesome. I never faced problem of connection or speed and mind you, i have tried in peak hours/days too.

as far as Parsona, no Idea. I use their plain old package which they introduced in beginning.

also, no idea about VPN client but yes there are available on net, you may check symbian software archieve.

Also i need a cheap mobile set of any brand who provides Bluetooth and Symbian based can you suggest me one?

S60R3 will also ship Flastlite 2.x so bye bye to J2me =)

Adnan , you wrote about GPRS factor , well Telenor charges the same Rs 15/mb be it EDGE or GPRS , way too expensive if anyone want to use it as Telenor is not offering unlimited data packages like Warid and mobilink , I have posted about free mobile Tv on my blog oure61.blogspot.com ( sorry no local channels ) and using the same on my E70 through wifi though it says that it supports GPRS but I have yet to try it .

Regarding Personal tracking through GPS , I am using the same technology through my E70 , a BT GPS and Symot Tracker . now my parents / wife :) can track my location in real time anywhere in the world where GPRS is available . It uses a web based interface and uses Google maps to show the location .

I am also working on a GPS based map for nokia , 80 % work is done ( Callibration didn;t worked as expected ) Inshallah by tomorrow I will make it functional

Farhan, your wife would be thanking GPS guy that they invented this technology. Khurram might not be willing to hand such mobile to his wife :-)

Farhan, I would be intresting to learn more about GPS based MAP system. You could try Google's MAP and map GPS points with GMAp's cordinate system. I did start a web based application for Karachi Map but unfortunately due to time and lack of broadband at home, I couldmn't make further progress.
