Uninstalling SQL Server 2005

If you tried uninstalling SQL Server 2005; and still see its traces in the system (Services or files); try doing following

  • From its installation source; issue, start /wait Setup.exe /qb REMOVE=ALL INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>, Use MSSQLSERVER as instance name for default
  • start /wait msiexec.exe /qb /X setup\sqlncli.msi
  • Uninstall everything from Control Panel’s Add/Remove Program applet (if you see anything there)
  • Delete all the files in Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server (if SQL 2005 is the only server installed; otherwise be careful)

This doesn’t mean that I have stopped working with SQL Server 2005; I just had to uninstall it on one system today; and in the middle; things went wrong.
