Languages…

Belated Ramadan and Eid Greetings! I had been busy both at work and at home, could not even catch up with my subscribed RSS feeds…

The other day I was watching Urdu version of “Baby’s Day Out” along with my kids on Geo. My wife had a busy vacation; house workers were off and as we have moved back living with parents and being elder she was managing all the house on vacations; cooking, cleaning etc She was passing by and heard some dialogue which later before sleeping mentioned saying “Was that Urdu version original or it was just fun?” I asked why; and then she mentioned that dialogue “Mein Kabhi Bhi Koi Bachey Peda Nahi Karo Gan” which the villain spoke when he was pissed by the little baby…she was not happy with the translation saying its not good for kids...This made me thinking that languages have culture and one cannot translate one language saying to other completely..for instance in this case; the English version might be “I will never have any kids” and it doesn't sound so disturbing…

Same applies to programming languages too…when you are coding with some particular language you need to adopt to its culture…you may translate from one to another; but you loose the essence…Even VB.NET and C#; both have same platform; same base class library and almost same feature set; but have different culture and background…
